Most of the time, I prefer snacks that are high in fat, protein and have at least 150-200 calories or I find myself snacking again 5 minutes later. Current favorites: apple + almond butter or cheese + crackers. (Ok, cheese + crackers isn’t current, it’s constant).

But there are times, *cough* at night *cough* when I’m not really hungry, I just want something.

Here are the “snacks” that aren’t really snacks  - for those times when I want something but don’t need it.

Low Calorie Snacks:

  • miso soup (you can use instant or make your own with miso + wakame)
  • tea
  • a few olives
  • raw veggies like celery, cucumber
  • high-water fruit like watermelon, grapes, melon, etc.
  • frozen fruit bars
  • frozen vegetables like broccoli, cauliflower, green beans
  • seaweed snacks
  • roasted asparagus
  • brothy soups
  • leafy salads with a splash of olive oil and vinegar
  • dill pickle or sauerkraut
  • sliced tomato with drizzle of olive oil, salt & pepper
  • tomato juice
  • air-popped popcorn
  • grilled scallions (we had these all the time in Mexico growing up)!

Any favorites to add to the list?

You grew up in Mexico? I never knew that – that’s so cool!

My “want but dont need” snacks are a small slice of fresh mozzarella, chocolate covered fruit/nuts or a slice of bread with olive oil. When I’m munchy but not really hungry, it’s not so much the nutrients I’m after bu a bold pop of flavor, so I don’t mind going with a small quantity of something indulgent to savor.

I didn’t grow up in Mexico – we just spent a fair amount of time there when I was a kid so I have lots of memories!

Great ideas….I was just saying last night that we don’t NEED to eat popcorn at 8:30 while watching TV. Brian just ‘thinks’ he needs to have a snack. We aren’t even hungry! P.S. Popcorn is great but we cake on the cheese sauce that I’m sure it’s the best! I think it’s more of a habit…

    EMILY!

I just got caught up on a bunch of your posts – so much goodness to be had! Loving the new series but loving that you are loving LA even more! All your workout classes and restaurants sound so fab. And your recipes! I will be making that pumpkin curry…breakfast cobb salad…and those dates. Mmmmm…love me some bacon-wrapped dates.

P.S. How are you liking the BlogHer ad network? I am thinking of switching…

    Love you friend!

My favorite snack right now are dates stuffed with peanut butter. I guess I like higher fat and protein snacks too! I also love popcorn. Great list of snack! :)

I like heavier snacks too and try to drink a cup of tea or water with cucumber and lemon when I’ve convinced myself I’m hungry and really are not. Sometimes, cottage cheese and fresh berries is my night time snack.
