focus on: cherimoya fruit

in fruit, vegan

Always on the lookout for new and interesting fruits and vegetables and not always as aware of the prices that go along with it – does anyone else have trouble estimating prices by pound? – I came across the cherimoya, a hybrid fruit of sorts with flavors reminiscent of papaya, pineapple and guava. Cherimoya’s are native to Chile, Ecuador and Peru, which makes me feel a tinge of guilt and a glimmer of hope that mine didn’t travel that far.

While Mark Twain described it as “the most delicious fruit known to men,” I’m not sure I share that same enthusiasm. The texture was a bit grainy and it wasn’t as juicy as I would have liked. Perhaps it wasn’t quite ripe, but at $6/piece, I’m not sure I want to try again. The guava taste was the flavor that stood out for me and while it was enjoyable, it just isn’t enough to justify this purchase again.

Nutritionally, they are good sources of calcium, Vitamin C and niacin but don’t eat the rind or the seeds – they can be poisonous!

Have you seen or tried cherimoya?

Share it!

Never heard of this fruit before! I admire you for trying something new! Especially since parts of it are poisonous! Yikes!

It is only poisonous if the seeds are crushed open and if the bark is injected so I wasn’t too worried!!

I love trying new fruit but am weary of wasting it since I never know how to cut it or if I would like it.

I’ve never even heard of it. Good for you though, for trying something new.
BTW, I accidentally bought a $4 jicama the other day. I needed one and stopped at our upscale grocery store (equivalent of Byerly’s) because it was close – ugh.

At least I’m not the only one I guess!! The worst ever was about 2 cups organic cherries that ended up costing $13!!! I need better estimation skills!

Never heard of that fruit! Loved the fact that you tried it though and gave us a report on the taste, texture, and price.
I have a love hate relationship with new food. I love to try new things, but hate to pay for it especially if it is pricy and not knowing whether or not I will like it!

Weird! The grocery store guy recommended these to me the other day! He also mentioned they were hella expensive so to be honest, I didn’t think seriously about them….glad you tried them out and reported back!
